You do not need a boat, a guide, or a week of vacation to catch trout in the Carson National Forest. Eagle Rock Lake, a small day-use area just off Highway 38 between Questa and Red River, is one of the easiest and most family-friendly fisheries in northern New Mexico — and after a recent restoration, it is fishing well.

The lake sits in a scenic pocket of the Questa Ranger District, an easy drive on paved highway with a short hop to the water. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish stocks it regularly from spring through fall, which means there are almost always catchable trout cruising within casting distance of the shore. For kids and beginners, that matters more than trophy potential: action keeps people fishing.

The formula here is simple. A light spinning rod, a small bobber, and PowerBait or a salmon egg will catch stocker rainbows all day. Fly anglers can do well with small nymphs and dry flies when fish are rising, especially in the cooler hours of morning and evening. Because it is a day-use area, plan on catch-and-release or keeping only what you will eat — and check the current New Mexico fishing regulations for bag limits before you go, since stocked waters follow the statewide rules.

Make it a half-day, not just a fishing stop. The area has picnic sites, and the drive itself — along the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway corridor — is half the pleasure, with the Red River running nearby and trailheads in every direction. Pair the lake with a hike, a picnic, and an ice cream in Red River, and you have the classic northern New Mexico summer day.

A few etiquette notes for busy days: the lake is small and popular, so give other anglers room, keep dogs leashed and out of the swimming areas, and pack out everything including tangled line, which is deadly to birds and wildlife. A New Mexico fishing license is required for anglers 12 and older. For a low-effort, high-reward outing in the Carson, Eagle Rock Lake is hard to beat.
