Mid-October is the sweet spot for the South Boundary Trail, and also the warning bell. The aspens along this high-country route between Angel Fire and Taos are at their brightest right now, and the window before snow closes the upper trail is getting short. For hikers, riders and mountain bikers who have been putting it off all summer, this is the week to go.

October is prime fuelwood time in northern New Mexico. Nights are turning cold, hunting seasons keep the forest busy, and there is still time to put up a winter woodpile before snow makes back roads muddy or impassable. On the Carson National Forest, that work starts with a permit — and with knowing exactly what a dead and down fuelwood permit does and does not allow.

Fall brings a fishing season unlike any other in northern New Mexico, and it is now under way at Eagle Nest Lake. The state's Special Kokanee Salmon Snagging Season opened October 1 and runs through December 31 at Eagle Nest Lake, according to the New Mexico Department of Wildlife's 2026-2027 Fishing Rules and Information booklet.

The countdown is officially on in Carson country. Taos Ski Valley has announced November 26, 2026, as the opening date for its winter 2026-27 season, giving skiers and snowboarders across northern New Mexico a firm date to circle as fall turns toward winter in the high Sangre de Cristo Mountains above Taos.

Mid-October is prime time in elk country, and the current round of hunts is already under way across the Carson National Forest. For hunters holding draw licenses, and for everyone else sharing the trails this week, knowing which units are active helps make for a safer, calmer trip.

Two northern New Mexico mountain towns that have long been linked by a winding highway will soon be linked by trail as well. The Carson National Forest has approved the Questa to Red River Trail, an approximately 11.9-mile unpaved, multi-use pathway between the Village of Questa and the Town of Red River.

Mid-October is the shoulder season on Wheeler Peak, and the window for a straightforward hike to the top of New Mexico is closing. Snowfall typically begins in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness in early October, and every calm, clear fall day from here on is a gift. Hikers who want the 13,161-foot summit — the highest point in the state — without snowshoes or skis should be watching the forecast and picking their day now.

Bear hunters planning a fall trip into Carson country need to check the map before they go. In its October 9, 2026 harvest update, the New Mexico Department of Wildlife lists Bear Management Zone 3 as closed for the season, after the harvest limit was met. Zone 3 covers Game Management Units 49, 50 and 53, the units that include much of the high country around Taos, Questa and Red River in the Carson National Forest.

October is the sweet spot for trout in northern New Mexico. Summer's heat has loosened its grip, water temperatures are dropping into the trout's comfort zone, and fish that spent the summer holding deep are feeding with purpose. This week's state fishing report, compiled from the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, shows favorable conditions across Carson country — from the Pecos River to the Rio Grande near Questa.

You do not need a boat, a guide, or a week of vacation to catch trout in the Carson National Forest. Eagle Rock Lake, a small day-use area just off Highway 38 between Questa and Red River, is one of the easiest and most family-friendly fisheries in northern New Mexico — and after a recent restoration, it is fishing well.
